[edit] Logging In
PseudoLocal uses Facebook login to authenticate users, and allow them to edit and contribute content to this site. If you aren't logged in, look on the top-right corner of any PseudoLocal page and you will find the Log in link. This will redirect you to Facebook where you will be asked to enter your credentials. If you do not have a Facebook account, you will have the option to make one on the Facebook login page.
[edit] Adding a Page
Adding a page is one of the best ways to contribute to PseudoLocal, and there are several good techniques to make sure that your page has good information, and is linked into the PseudoLocal wiki in all the right places. Follow these steps to add a page:
- Search. Every page on PseudoLocal has a search box. Please search for terms related to your topic. If a page already exists about your topic, contribute to that page, instead of creating a new page.
- Once you have found that no page on your topic exists, identify one or more pages already on PseudoLocal that are related to your topic and edit that page. Type in the following markup into the related page:
| [[New Page Name]] |
- After you save the related page you will see a Red Link which you can click on to edit the page.
- Good content is key to a good page. Pages with the highest page views often have an Infobox, a map, pictures and well written, interesting text about the topic.
- Linking is key. Make sure to link your page to other relevant pages, otherwise it may be hard for others to find your page. One good way is to put a marker on relevant maps. (See List of Maps to find out which ones to link to.)
[edit] Editing a Page
Most pages will have an Edit option at the top of the page, allowing logged in users to add content. Click on it to edit the contents of a page.
[edit] Adding Basic Information
When writing an article on PseudoLocal, its really important to include the basic information about the place such as its name (in English and Chinese), phone number, website, etc. Below is the template for this information.
{{Infobox_POI
| name_english=English Name
| name_chinese=中文名字
| name_pinyin=Zhong Wen Ming Zi
| phone=888-88888888
| address_chinese=某一中国地址
| address_pinyin=mou yi zhong guo di zhi
| address_english=Some Chinese Address
| email=user@domain.com
| website=http://www.sitename.cn
}}
|
On using the infobox: all pages that represent landmarks or venues should have an infobox. This includes, but are not limited to tourist sites, hotels, restaurants, bars, theaters, and performance spaces. This also means that in general, cities and provinces should not have infoboxes, and neither should complex concepts like Money Transfer Beijing.
Most pages have an Edit link near the page title at the top of the page. If you click on the link, and are logged in, you will be able to edit the page. Cut and paste the text from the above box and paste it into the editing area. Customize the fields to the values appropriate for the location you are describing.
[edit] Adding a Map
Adding a map is probably one of the best things you can do for a page. In general, pages with maps get 2 times as many hits as pages without maps! After logging in navigate to the page you want to edit and click edit on the top of a page. After you click on the edit link you should see the page editing buffer and a bunch of buttons. Right on top of that bunch of buttons you will see a small blue link that says make a map. Image below shows the make a map link circled in red.
Click on the make a map link and a map control will appear on your editing screen that looks like the image below. The image will center on Beijing.
You'll need to zoom out and pan around a bit to find the location that you want. When you have found a location on the map click on the location and add the point that you want.
Very Important: when the markup from the map tool (marked in red above) is complete, you need to cut and paste the markup into the buffer. Make sure to save.
[edit] Adding Images
You can add an image to any page by using the tags in the table below. You may want to upload an image to the site to show in your page, in which case, you need to go to the Uploads page. To view a list of already uploaded images that you can embed in a page, go to the Image List page.
| Description | You type | You get |
| Embed image (with alt text) |
| |
| Link to description page |
| |
| Link directly to file |
| |
| Thumbnail (centered, 100 pixels wide, with caption) |
| |
| Border (100 pixels) Results in a very small gray border |
| |
| Frameless Like thumbnail, respect user preferences for image width but without border and no right float. |

[edit] Editing Your Profile
When logged in, each user will have a link to their username on the header navigation bar. Take a look on the image below.
Click on the username link, and you will go to your own personal page, that anyone can edit. You can add information to that page as you see fit. See example.
Some things that are nice to have in your profile page:
- Articles you wrote or contributed to.
- Where you live.
- Cities you have been to in China.
- Link to your blog or website.
- What are you doing in China? (if applicable)
[edit] Uploading a File
You can upload files that you are interested in sharing with other users of this site. Do not upload copyrighted material. The upload page gives logged in users the ability to upload files. A full list of updated files is also available for browsing. A common reason to upload a file is to provide an image for use in a page. Directions for embedding images are listed on this page.
[edit] Advertising
PseudoLocal has a novel concept of community driven advertising. This means that if users think that a certain page would benefit from having ads on it, feel free to insert some ads into the page body. Use the markup below:
| <google>Banner Ad</google> |
That will produce an ad banner like the one below, but with ads customized for the page.
Please use ads sparingly. Some pages are more appropriate than others for including advertising. For example, a page about Beijing resaurants might provide useful ads or discounts, while ads on a page about the Canadian Embassy will probably be irrelevant.
If you see a page with irrelevant advertising, or advertising that is in poor taste, please log in and remove it.
