Here's how to shop in Beijing tourist markets:
1) Don't ask them to state a price -- you state one first. Then stick with it. Prices for common items should be as follows:
- Silk tie - 10-15 RMB each
- Ski jacket - 180 RMB (incl fleece liner and outer)
- Pearl necklace - 20 - 40 RMB (seriously! for two pearls on a silver string, or for a strand of pearls; 4th floor boutiques are way more expensive and I don't trust them)
- Scroll - 40 RMB for a customized one, but basically pay however much you like it
- Makeup - 5-10 RMB for lip gloss, mascara, etc.
- Knock-off / leather bag - 40 RMB for a Tod's
- Sunglasses - 20 RMB
- Watches - 30-40 RMB (remember they break if they sense water is coming)
- T-shirts - 15 RMB
2) If you don't know the price, ask for a nicer looking similar item first, bargain down that price, and then switch to the cheaper item.
3) Walk in and say "I need to buy a 10 RMB gift for someone, what do you have?"
